Passive intermodulation (PIM) increasingly threatens RF network performance, particularly on the uplink. As mobile networks become more complex, the potential for PIM-related disruption will continue to increase, demanding proactive mitigation strategies from all mobile network operators (MNOs).

Sources of PIM include poorly seated connectors, damaged cables and moisture infiltration, among many others. PIM vulnerability also exists at the network level, which will ultimately decrease site coverage area, increase data error rates and effectively reduce traffic capacity.

Key facts

Did you know?

  • PIM is pervasive but preventable.
  • LTE and 5G networks are especially sensitive to the effects of PIM.
  • Even low levels of PIM can severely degrade performance — for example, a 1 dB drop in uplink sensitivity due to PIM can reduce coverage by 11%.
  • PIM can be caused by radio waves interacting with dirty, corroded or rusty parts, earning it the nickname “the rusty bolt effect.”
